Sheriff Virgil is an experienced and dedicated public safety professional who has demonstrated expertise in Business, Leadership, Clinical Patient Care, Emergency Management, Fire Suppression and Law Enforcement Tactics and Operations. He studied Emergency Medical Technology in 1999 and Emergency Medical Science (Paramedic) in 2003 at Robeson Community College.

Roderick Virgil is originally from Hoke County where he is a member of St. James Church. 

He is also an accomplished playwright having penned Too Many Jobs, a play hosted in Raeford and Fayetteville in 2016. In addition, Sheriff Virgil is the President/Chief Executive Officer of Quality Lawn Care, a business he began in Raeford in 2018.

His professional career has seen him volunteering with the Hoke County Rescue Squad and Hillcrest Fire Department since 1999 and serving on the Hoke County Sheriff's Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) as a reserve deputy and tactical medic from 2009 to 2021. Further, Virgil is a rapid response paramedic, a critical care paramedic, and was the EMS Director/Systems Administrator for Hoke County from 2009-2011.

Virgil subsequently received a Critical Care Paramedic Endorsement in 2006, and has received a Tactical Paramedic Endorsement. He has served with Robeson EMS, Cumberland County EMS, FirstHealth Hoke EMS, New Hanover Regional EMS.

Roderick is the president and chief executive officer of Quality Lawn Care. He is a rapid response and critical care paramedic and previously served as Hoke County’s emergency medical services director and systems administrator and worked with Robeson Emergency Medical Services, Cumberland County Emergency Medical Services, FirstHealth Hoke Emergency Medical Services, and New Hanover Regional Emergency Medical Services.

Roderick Cornelius Virgil is replacing Hubert Peterkin, who died unexpectedly during surgery nearly two weeks ago. Virgil said he was honored to take over the position and is excited to serve the community. Commissioners held a ceremony at noon to officially make Virgil the sheriff.

It’s called the Deputy Medic Program. Sheriff's deputies are receiving advanced training to be certified as emergency medical technicians. Two deputies are certified so far. They’re Lee Black and Maria Nawotniak. [...] The idea for this originated with Hoke County Sheriff Roderick Virgil. Along with being the county sheriff, he is also a flight medic. “My desire … my passion is that this will go throughout the nation. And other counties and entities will implement this,” Virgil said. More than 60,000 people live in Hoke County. The deputy medics will carry basic medical equipment in their patrol cars, and those vehicles will have both blue lights and red lights to signify their dual training.
