2026 Arizona General Election

I came to Arizona in 2014 to start a new phase of my career in technical marketing of hard-rock mining wear parts. I worked with mines across Arizona and throughout the United States, as well as internationally in Canada, Mexico, and Mongolia.

About Me | Brian Matlock for Arizona State Mine Inspector

After high school, along with joining the United States Marine Reserves, infantry unit, I went to Tennessee Technological University where I received my BS in Mechanical Engineering.

Service has been a steady constant in my journey. From early volunteer efforts as my daughter's soccer coach and my son's Cub Scout Pack Leader, to more recent leadership roles as the Vice Chair of the Apache Junction Democrats and community roles as Precinct Committeeman, and recent graduate of the City of Apache Junction Citizen Leadership Institute, I've always believed that meaningful change begins with showing up.

Brian Matlock came to Arizona in 2014. He earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Tennessee Technological University. He has two children.

My career in heavy industry began on the road, servicing pulp and paper operations across North America as a field service engineer. From the forests of the Pacific Northwest, where I worked in forest products design and production, to the rugged demands of dragline rigging, wear component design, and mining-focused field engineering, I've built a hands-on, solutions-driven path through some of the most challenging environments in the sector.

Brian Matlock (Arizona) - Ballotpedia

Brian is a first-time candidate for political office.

Matlock proposes establishing a new statewide health and safety model for mining operations. “What I would propose is we would adopt, for the sake of the description, an international type of a standard model for health and safety management. And basically, it's like what it would do is it would be very similar to probably models that the mine operators already have,” Matlock said.

Arizona is poised to have a mine inspector race for the first time in 8 years

As Mine Inspector, I plan to: • Put real-world safety first by enforcing practical standards that protect miners every day. Not politics. Not bureaucracy. Just results keeping people safe. • Bring a professional, boots-on-the-ground approach to the office focused on expertise, accountability, and transparency. This is not a political position. It’s a public safety job.

Arizona Clean Elections Commission Voter Education Guide: State Mine Inspector

Work with local experts and federal agencies to secure abandoned uranium mines in the Sovereign Lands. Secure backcountry abandoned mines that threaten families, hikers, and rural communities. Arizona’s mining industry is vital, but nothing is more important than the people who power it. The State Mine Inspector must be visible, responsive, and accountable to both workers and the public. I’m ready to get to work.

According to Presmyk, copper mining generates $15 billion to $20 billion for Arizona, while total mining output reaches $35 billion. He stated this economic output is sufficient to fund the state government as well as municipal budgets across Phoenix and Tucson with remaining funds left over. Presmyk described the state mine inspector's office as educators and mentors rather than strict regulators like federal agencies.

He said inspectors visit work sites, such as truck shops, to explain unsafe conditions and demonstrate how to correct them. Presmyk added that safety is an integral component of mining alongside production. He pointed to new operations like South 32, Ivanhoe Electric, and Arizona Sonoran Copper, noting their goals of achieving zero serious accidents and zero fatalities over multi-decade lifespans by establishing safety as an initial workplace culture.
