Nelson E. Adams

Southport board of aldermen candidates 2021 election

Nelson Adams was born and raised in Southport. He attended the segregated Brunswick County Training School, which opened in the 1920s. After graduating, Adams moved to Newport News, Virginia for about three years and worked in a shipyard warehouse. Upon his return to Southport, Adams started working at the Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point, where he continues to work today as a longshoreman.

Nelson previously served on the Southport Board of Aldermen for nearly 40 years. He first ran for a seat on the board in 1977 and won. He lost re-election in 1981 but was re-elected in 1983. He ran for a seat on the board again in 2021 but lost to Lora Sharkey.
