Russel holds a bachelor's degree in geology from Marshall University and a master's degree in geoenvironmental studies from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. 

Russell previously worked as the GIS director for the Wayne County Auditor's Office and as a GIS mapping technician for the Federated Energy Services Cooperative Inc.-North Central Electric and Lorain-Medina Rural Electric. He also worked as a geologist and project manager at CTL Engineering, Inc. 

Russel Roberton currently serves as the Wayne County Auditor. He was appointed to this position in 2024.
