Nathan is from Tryon and attended Tryon High School. He earned his associate's degree in physical education from Arizona Western Junior College and his bachelor's degree in sociology and criminal justice from Shaw University. He and his wife, Geraldine, have 2 children. He is a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.

Nathan is retired. He previously worked as a security officer with Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, the chief of police in Tryon, and as a law enforcement officer. He served in the North Carolina Army National Guard for 16 years.

Neill earned his bachelor's degree in economics and accounting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He serves on the board of directors for Redeemed Steel.
