The Daily Tar Heel, Q&A: Allison Riggs speaks about civil rights experience, keeping seat on NC Supreme Court

Allison grew up in West Virginia and has a bachelor's degree in microbiology, a masters in history, and a law degree from the University of Florida.


Allison currently serves on the North Carolina Supreme Court. She worked with the Southern Coalition for Social Justice for 14 years until 2022, most recently as the co-executive director of programs. 

Allison Riggs was appointed to the North Carolina Supreme Court by Governor Roy Cooper in September of 2023. She is currently serving a partial term. Previously, she served on the North Carolina Court of Appeals.

Allison Riggs

Jefferson was born and raised in Red Oak, North Carolina. He graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2003 with a bachelor's degree and from North Carolina Central School of Law with a law degree. Jefferson is married to his wife Katye and has a son, Jay. They are members of Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Raleigh.

Jefferson has served as a judge on various different courts since 2015. Before his judicial appointment, Jefferson was a prosecutor with the Wake County District Attorney's Office. He is a veteran and serves as a captain and judge advocate general (JAG) officer in the North Carolina Army National Guard. Jefferson has also worked as a charter fisherman on the North Carolina coast.
