Carl Ford was born in Rowan County, where he has spent most of his life, and graduated from A.L. Brown High School. Carl and his wife Angela have four children and seven grandchildren, and they are members of City Revival Church in Kannapolis.

Carl Ford worked at Cannon Mills in Kannapolis from 1973 to 1982 and managed Fryes Roller Rink in Concord. In 1982, he began working at WRKB and later purchased WRKB and WRNA in 1992, starting Ford Broadcasting. His radio stations have won numerous awards, and he is a two-time Golden Mic winner.

Carl Ford was elected to the North Carolina House in 2012 and served three terms, during which he chaired the Committee on State and Local Government for two terms. He was elected to the North Carolina Senate in November 2018 and re-elected in 2020. Ford has also served as a Rowan County Commissioner from 2008 to 2012, including terms as Vice-Chair and Chair, and was elected by his peers as the Republican Joint Caucus Leader.
