Bob is from New Bern, North Carolina and attended New Bern Senior High School. He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Oklahoma. He is married to his wife, Amy, with whom he has three children.  He is a Christian. His family are members of Union Point Church.
