Todd holds a bachelor's degree in business and managerial economics from North Carolina State University. He was charged with assault by pulling a gun on an office member in June of 2024. His case is currently pending in court. Todd was also charged with operating a motorboat while impaired, resisting a public officer, refusing to allow inspection, and driving a motorboat in a no-wake zone in 2012. He is a Christian. 

Todd serves as the president and owner of J.P. Yates Construction and Yates Grading and Paving. He is also an area president and market liaison for the Hill, Chesson & Woddy, a Gallagher company. He previously worked in business development at Blue Cross North Carolina and Kaiser Permanente.
