Johnny is from Cleveland County and attended Grover and Kings Mountain High School, as well as Gaston College. He has two children, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He and his children survive his wife, Mary, who passed away in 2000. He previously served as a volunteer and captain of the Kings Mountain Rescue Squad.
