The county sheriff is responsible for:

  • Preserving the peace and suppressing attempts to breach this peace such as riots and insurrections
  • Executing arrest warrants
  • Managing the county jail and detention center (unless it is operated by a private property)
  • Supervising and overseeing search and rescue parties

In Montana, county sheriffs are elected for four year terms
