Kyle is a native of Frankfort. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Kentucky and his law degree from Ohio Northern University. He is married to Jennifer Vest Thompson, and they have 5 children.

Kyle is the owner of a law firm he opened seventeen years ago, focusing on various areas of law including domestic, criminal, business organizations, contracts, insurance, personal injury, and administrative law. He was an adjunct professor of legal and business studies at Sullivan University for 10 years. Additionally, he founded Capital Court Authority, LLC, a private probation and drug testing company.

Kyle Thompson has been elected to the Frankfort City Commission twice, serving since 2020. He is also a former assistant Franklin County attorney and general counsel for the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services.
