John was born and raised in Texas and moved to Kentucky in 1985. He is married to his wife, Robin, and they have two children. John earned a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Texas Tech Univeristy and a master's degree in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He is a member of the Louisville Arena Authority Board, Kentucky Capital Planning Advisory Board, Kentucky Program for Agricultural Conservation Easements Board, and Kentucky Environmental Education Council Board.

John is retired. He previously worked at UPS Airlines in senior leadership positions in engineering, IT, logistics, strategic planning, and fleet operations.
