Dewey has lived in Gwinnett County for 35 years and graduated from Okmulgee High School. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in History and Government from East Central University in 1976. He is married to his wife, Linda and they have two daughters, and four grandsons. He currently serves as the president of the Atlanta North Georgia Labor Council. 

McClain played in the NFL for five years on the Atlanta Falcons. He also served as President of the Metro Atlanta NFL Players Association Chapter for four years.
