Tara is from Des Moines, Iowa. She has a bachelor's degree in political science and communication from Coe College and a law degree from the University of Baltimore. She lives with her husband and children in Stafford County.

Tara used to be an elementary school teacher. She worked at the Holy Cross Academy, a Catholic private school.
