- Transportation Commissioners are part of a three-member board that supervises the Mississippi Department of Transportation. It is responsible for developing and maintaining all state and federal roadways within the state.
- The transportation commission is also responsible for supporting Mississippi’s public transportation system, ports and waterways, airways, and railroads.
- The commission is responsible for appointing the executive director of the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
- Mississippi’s transportation commission is the only popularly elected transportation board in the United States.
- Transportation Commissioners are elected to four year terms. The elections take place in odd-numbered years before presidential elections (2023, 2027, 2031, etc.). They are elected to one of three specific districts: the Northern District, the Central District, or the Southern District.
