Kay has a bachelor's degree from the University of Kentucky and an M.D. from the University of Louisville. She lives with her husband. They attend East Cobb United Methodist Church.

Kay has been an orthopaedic hand surgeon for over 30 years. Previously, she was the President of Resurgens Orthopaedics.

Kay Kirkpatrick is the current State Senator representing District 32. She was first elected in 2016 and has served two terms. She is Chairwoman of the Veterans, Military, and Homeland Security Committee.

As Senator, she authored and sponsored health-related bills, "including: surprise billing, transparency for consumers, emergency prescriptions, and access to care across state lines including telemedicine."

As Senator, she also sponsored legislation to improve Georgia’s statistics on maternal mortality.

Supports adding vaping to the current tobacco tax structure, and raising the age for tobacco to 21.
