Tyler describes himself as a seventh-generation farmer from Ocilla, Georgia.

Tyler has an associate degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and a Bachelor of Science in agricultural engineering at the University of Georgia. He then returned to Irwin County where he still works as a farmer. He has been a member of the Georgia State Senate since 2013.
