Michael was born and raised in Harlem in New York City.  He lives in Cobb County.

Michael has an associate degree from the Community College of the United States Air Force in Administrative Management, a bachelor’s degree in communications and afro-american studies from the State University of New York, and a bachelor’s degree in business education from the University of Central Oklahoma. He also has a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Central Oklahoma, a specialist’s degree in educational leadership from Georgia State University and a doctorate degree from the University of Georgia. Michael works in adult education in the Cobb County school district. He served as a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force Reserves. He also worked as a Vocational, Educational and Instructional Coordinator at Jefferson Place and City of Refuge.

Michael has served as the state Senator from District 33 since he was first elected in 2014. Michael is a member of the senate Higher Education committee, Finance committee, Judiciary Committee, regulated industries committee, voting redistricting committee, and Veterans, Military and Homeland.
