What is your job/occupation?
Deputy chief court administrator, Municipal Court of Atlanta
What city/neighborhood do you live in?
South Fulton County
Is this your first time running for office?
Yes
What experiences have best prepared you to hold elected office?
My diverse legal experience in various fields of law under the jurisdiction of Superior Court, including my court administrative role, has best prepared me for the Fulton County Superior Court bench.
What actions would you take to enhance government transparency and trust in government?
To ensure and enhance government transparency in the courtroom, I intend to openly hold all parties accountable for their role in the judicial process while being firm with timeliness and limiting communications with parties unless in open court and or supported by law; i.e. legal experience parte communications
The court system is increasingly seen as overtly political. What more can be done to assure the public that the courts are neutral arbitrators of the law?
The public would have more confidence in the judicial process if all parties were treated equitably with equal access to justice and due process of law regardless of economic status or ability to retain counsel.
What are your personal security concerns, given the increasing attacks on judges and court officials nationwide and the rise in hostility toward judicial officials generally?
I do not have any safety concerns at this time.
How will you manage large caseloads exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic?
I intend to implore the tools gained in my role as deputy chief court administrator by having daily court sessions with as many hearings that can reasonably be heard on a given calendar while also holding all parties to the court’s scheduling order or face sanctions. All parties deserve closure and timely dispositions in civil and criminal cases alike.
A number of judges are now streaming their court hearings and trials so they are completely open to the public. Will you commit to streaming your courtroom proceedings so anyone will be able to view them? If not, why not?
Absolutely. The judicial process should be open and transparent barring any legal basis for a closed hearing.
Do you believe public access to public records is sufficient in your jurisdiction and, if not, what steps do you support to remedy that?
Yes. I believe that Fulton County has limited issues with public access to public records, but I will support the will of the people as well as the Superior Court clerk to ensure appropriate processes are in place to restore the integrity of the process if there are concerns.
