The Branch Breakdown
What it means
A homestead exemption reduces the property taxes homeowners owe on their residences. This referendum proposes an additional $2,000 reduction in property taxes for public service employees. The taxes would otherwise be used by local schools.
Public service employees are defined as police and emergency workers, such as firefighters and paramedics; schoolteachers and administrators in the Gwinnett or Buford school districts; military members; and some Gwinnett County hospital personnel, defined as those “employed by or holding staff privileges” at a hospital located in the county.
Currently, there is no homestead exemption in Gwinnett County specific to public service employees.
A "yes" vote means
- Public service employees will receive a $2,000 reduction in property taxes.
